How to Prepare for Finding a Temporary Job This Fall – and What Options You Have Right Now

job temporar

Every year, fall acts as a mini hiring season: companies adjust their teams to handle peak activity from September to December (back-to-school, Black Friday, holidays). Short-term projects are on the rise as organizations focus on budget optimization.
If you’re looking for extra income, a transition into a new role, or simply want to build experience quickly, now is the right time to apply for a temporary job. Here’s how to prepare and what opportunities are currently available.

What You Should Know About the Job Market Now

In Q3 2025, global hiring intentions remain positive, though more cautious across Europe. In Romania, the Net Employment Outlook is at +6%, up 3 points from last year — a sign that hiring continues, but selectively and often project-based.

As of early September 2025, ANOFM announced more than 34,600 job openings nationwide (plus EURES listings), a solid offering for the start of the season.

Looking at job board data from previous years, most temporary roles have been in Sales, Finance/Accounting, Engineering, Construction/Installations, and Management — a trend that continues in 2025, particularly for project work.

How to Boost Your Chances of Landing a Temporary Job

  1. Update Your CV with a Project Focus

A temporary-job CV should highlight what you can deliver in 90 days. Start with your job title and availability (e.g., “Sales Consultant – available immediately, 3-month contract”). Add a short results section: “Processed 200+ daily orders with zero errors”; “Increased seasonal campaign sales by 15%.”

  1. Prepare a “Quick Interview Kit”

Temporary job interviews are short. Have 2–3 clear STAR (Situation–Task–Action–Result) examples ready to prove fast results. Be prepared to discuss flexibility for shifts, overtime, or weekends.

Bonus: ask 2–3 smart questions, such as “What are the key goals for the first 4 weeks?” or “Is there a possibility of contract extension?”

  1. Optimize Your Online Presence

Keep LinkedIn up to date. Add “open to temporary/short-term contracts” in your headline and showcase relevant projects in the Projects section. If you have a portfolio (even a simple one in Google Drive), include the link in your CV.

  1. Line Up Recommendations

Even for short-term roles, employers value references. Choose people who can confirm you adapted quickly and delivered results under time pressure.

High-Demand Sectors This Fall

  • Retail & E-commerce – Roles: sales associates, cashiers, call-center agents, order processors, warehouse pickers/packers. POS, ERP, and customer service experience are key.
  • Logistics & Delivery – online shopping boosts demand for warehouse staff, handlers, and couriers. A driver’s license or WMS knowledge is an advantage.
  • Events & Promotions – fall is full of fairs, festivals, and campaigns. Roles: promoters, hostesses, sound/montage technicians. Evening/weekend availability is essential.
  • Back-office & Finance – many companies outsource repetitive tasks short-term: data entry, junior accountants, AR/AP roles. Excel and ERP skills (SAP, Oracle) are a plus.
  • Construction & Engineering – projects often aim to finish before winter. Roles: technicians, site coordinators, project engineers. Certifications matter.
  • IT Support – even on short-term contracts, there’s demand for L1 helpdesk, manual QA, and content operations. Foreign language skills and tool knowledge are valued.

How to Apply Effectively

  1. Target Roles You Can Deliver On Immediately

Employers hiring short-term don’t have time for long training. Apply where you already have experience.

Example: “I have worked in a warehouse before – familiar with scanning and picking, can hit 95–98% accuracy in week one.”

Why it matters: recruiters instantly see they don’t need to spend days on training and will shortlist you.

  1. Send a message along with your CV

In addition to the CV, add 3–4 lines that summarize what you bring.

Recommended structure:

  • your availability (“I can start immediately, including evening/weekend shifts”)
  • 2–3 key skills (“POS operation and inventory management; 2 years of customer service experience”),
  • one relevant result (“Handled 150 orders daily without errors”).

Why it works: short messages are easy to scan and show you respect the recruiter’s time.

  1. Respond quickly and confirm attendance

For temporary projects, sometimes only 48–72 hours pass from posting to closing the candidate list.

Answer calls the same day, check email twice daily, and confirm immediately if you are available for an interview or training.

If you can’t answer right away, send a short message: “I saw your call, I am available after 5 p.m., I can call you then.” This shows professionalism and organization.

  1. Negotiate clear details from the beginning

Even for a temporary job, it’s important to set expectations on both sides.

Ask about:

  • net salary and payment method (monthly, weekly, per project),
  • overtime conditions and calculation,
  • exact shift schedule (including weekend rotation),
  • seasonal benefits (night-shift bonus, transport provided, meal vouchers, performance bonuses).

Strategic question: “Is there a chance of extension or conversion to a permanent contract if I perform well?” Many employers value openness to development.

  1. Track your applications

Applying to 10–15 jobs can get overwhelming if you don’t keep track. Create a simple table (Excel or Google Sheets) with:

  • company name,
  • role,
  • application date,
  • status (pending, interview, offer).
